Users across the globe faced intermittent access problems with ChatGPT after OpenAI confirmed a partial service disruption that led to widespread errors throughout the day.
According to outage-tracking site DownDetector, complaints began surfacing around midday Eastern Time and steadily increased overnight, crossing 15,000 reports by early morning. The highest spike in reports occurred shortly after noon, signaling a broad platform-level issue.
Most users reporting problems said ChatGPT itself was not responding properly, while a smaller percentage experienced trouble with the mobile app or logging into their accounts.
On its official status page, OpenAI acknowledged the disruption, stating that ChatGPT availability was affected and that updates to Custom GPTs were failing for some users. The company said engineers were actively investigating the situation and working to reduce the elevated error rates.
As of early afternoon, OpenAI had not shared a specific timeline for full service restoration, only noting that mitigation efforts were underway.
This marks the second day in a row that OpenAI has dealt with technical issues. Just a day earlier, both ChatGPT and API services experienced downtime linked to similar error spikes, briefly impacting users during the late afternoon.
ChatGPT, first released in 2022, is an AI-powered conversational tool designed to generate human-like responses using large-scale language models. It’s widely used for tasks such as writing, research assistance, translation, and customer support automation.
Supporters view ChatGPT as a major step forward for productivity and online information access, while critics continue to raise concerns about misuse, misinformation, and academic integrity. Despite the debate, outages like this highlight just how deeply the tool has become embedded in everyday digital workflows.
